assignment 2 : DESIGN PRINCIPLES (GROUP)

From my perspective, Project 2 aims to effectively communicate the principles of design through form manipulation and the creation of order in architectural compositions and spatial arrangements. Building on Project 1, we will extract shapes from our previously created patterns to explore and showcase our understanding of design principles in creating harmonious arrangements. This project provides a valuable opportunity to further develop our design expertise and appreciation for architectural and spatial design.

Part 1 Design Process - Exploring Design Principles in Principle Models:

  1. Group Formation and Principle Selection: In a group of 5-6 individuals, each member is tasked with selecting one (1) Design Principle from the provided list: BALANCE, RHYTHM/MOVEMENT, EMPHASIS, VARIETY, CONTRAST, or UNITY/HARMONY. As part of this process, I have personally chosen the Design Principle of BALANCE to work on throughout the project.

  2. Conceptualization - First Model (Fish-inspired): To begin, I delve into the conceptualization of my first Principle Model, drawing inspiration from the graceful movement of fish. Through sketches, diagrams, and annotations, I explore various design concepts that embody the concept of balance. By creating mock-up models and working models, I aim to translate these ideas into tangible forms, refining my designs as I progress.

  3. Design Refinement - Second Model (Bee Hive/Honeycomb-inspired): For the second Principle Model, I draw inspiration from the efficient and structured design of a bee hive or honeycomb. Using the knowledge gained from the first model, I refine my design approach and explore how balance can be represented in a different context. Through meticulous attention to detail and creative iterations, I develop mock-up models and working models that showcase the harmony achieved through the balance of elements.

  4. Documentation and Presentation: Throughout the design process, I diligently document my journey, capturing sketches, descriptions, and annotations to highlight the development of each Principle Model. These records will be compiled into a comprehensive presentation of slides, showcasing the evolution of my ideas and the embodiment of the Design Principle of BALANCE in both models.

  5. Orthographic Drawing :  I have chosen my first Principle Model inspired by fish bones to draw the five Orthographic Drawings (TOP, FRONT, RIGHT, LEFT, and BACK VIEWS) on A3 size paper (1:1 scale). These detailed drawings will showcase how the principle of balance is skillfully incorporated into the design. Once completed, I will scan them and include them in the slides compilation, providing a comprehensive visual representation of my Principle Model.

Part 2 Design Process - Group Exploration: Cycle of Shapes - Hybrid Model

  1. Collaboration and Model Combination: As we progress into the second phase, our group of five members comes together to embark on a collaborative exploration. We bring forth the individual Design Principle Models created by each member, igniting our collective creativity. Our shared concept, "Cycle of Shapes," serves as our guiding inspiration. With a shared vision, we set out to combine and manipulate these diverse models, pushing the boundaries of design to create something truly extraordinary.

  2. Exploratory Design - Hybrid Model: The heart of our exploration lies in the creation of a captivating Hybrid Model. Drawing from the "Cycle of Shapes" concept, we delve into an imaginative process of manipulating and integrating various volumetric forms and spatial arrangements. Our designs evolve as we experiment with articulation, seeking the perfect balance and harmony within the confines of a 40cm H x 30cm L x 30cm W perimeter. Each team member contributes their unique perspective, weaving a narrative that celebrates the fluidity and interconnectedness of shapes.

  3. Documenting the Journey: Our creative journey is a treasure trove of ideas and insights. Throughout our collaborative endeavor, we meticulously record our progress with diagrams, sketches, concept descriptions, and annotations. These records encapsulate the thought process behind each design decision, highlighting the evolution of our Hybrid Model. All our documentation finds its place in a comprehensive slides compilation, allowing us to share our design narrative with others.

REFLECTION

Throughout the Introduction to Spatial Design course, I have embarked on a captivating journey of creative exploration and design principles. In Part 1, I delved into the fundamental elements of design, honing my skills in form manipulation and understanding spatial relationships. The process of creating Principle Models based on the Design Principles has been both inspiring and enlightening, allowing me to grasp the significance of balance, rhythm, emphasis, variety, contrast, and unity/harmony in architectural compositions.

In Part 2, the collaborative Group Exploration phase took our creative endeavors to new heights. Combining our individual Design Principle Models, we ventured into uncharted territory, exploring various volumetric forms and spatial arrangements. The shared concept of the "Cycle of Shapes" provided a guiding light, inspiring us to intertwine our ideas and create a mesmerizing Hybrid Model. Through meticulous documentation and presentation, we effectively communicated our design narrative, showcasing the seamless integration of our principles.
