Phase 1: Preliminary studies – Townscape Appraisal & Mini Urban Intervention (15%)
In Phase 1, students were required to critically engage with the urban context through townscape appraisal and mini urban intervention exercises. This phase encouraged a deeper understanding of the site’s character, identity, and sense of place by examining both its physical form and social dynamics at macro and micro scales. Through observation, mapping, and theoretical interpretation, students reflected on how people experience and use the urban environment. The findings informed a responsive mini urban intervention, allowing students to translate analysis into design intentions that enhance place-making, community interaction, and the overall quality of the public realm
OUTCOME
Phase 2 & 3
In Phase 2 and Phase 3, students were required to translate their preliminary urban analysis into a coherent architectural proposal through the design of a Learning Centre within the Brickfields urban context. Building upon the findings from Phase 1, this stage involved developing an architectural design strategy that responds to community needs, urban character, and regulatory requirements. Students reflected on issues of place-making, scale, form, and circulation while exploring architectural narratives through precedent studies, massing models, and conceptual frameworks.
As the project progressed into Phase 3, students further refined their proposals through integrated design development, resolving spatial planning, structural systems, façade articulation, environmental strategies, and building services. This phase emphasized the synthesis of theory, technical considerations, and experiential quality, encouraging students to critically reflect on how architecture can activate the public realm, enhance social interaction, and contribute meaningfully to the existing townscape.
