Final Project – Heritage and Conservation Proposal
In this final project, we were tasked with developing a Heritage and Conservation: Adaptive Reuse Proposal for a selected building from Assignment 1. Our focus was on Restoran Tajudin Nasi Beriani, located on Jalan Hang Kasturi, Kuala Lumpur. The project required us to propose a conservation method to preserve and enhance the building’s façade and five-foot walkway, ensuring that its significant historical and cultural values were retained. Additionally, we were required to propose an adaptive reuse plan to prolong the building’s life and adapt it to contemporary needs.
The objective of this assignment was to develop a comprehensive understanding of heritage conservation principles through the creation of this proposal. This involved:
-
Ensuring the building’s architectural and cultural values are retained and celebrated.
-
Analyzing and addressing existing structural and aesthetic issues using appropriate conservation methods guided by the ICOMOS Charter and Jabatan Warisan Negara guidelines.
-
Proposing a functional and sustainable adaptive reuse plan to extend the building’s lifespan and adapt it to modern requirements.
-
Integrating case studies, research, and illustrations to provide a holistic and practical conservation proposal.

This final assignment was both a challenging and rewarding journey, allowing me to apply heritage conservation principles to Restoran Tajudin Nasi Beriani while exploring adaptive reuse strategies. It was a valuable opportunity to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, enhancing my understanding of preserving and revitalizing historical buildings.
The presentation phase was particularly insightful. The panels provided constructive feedback and emphasized the importance of creating better and more cohesive illustrations. They explained that, to strengthen my proposal, I should study and illustrate not just the selected building but the entire street—or even the broader context. This approach would help provide a more comprehensive and cohesive outcome, making the conservation proposal more impactful.
While I recognize that I may not have fully shown my potential in this project, the combination of passion and constructive criticism has fueled my determination to improve. With these lessons in mind, I am confident that I can refine my skills and produce more effective and meaningful work in future endeavors.

IT WAS FUN TIL THE END.
